Over 60% of businesses plan to grow their mainframe computing power, up from 56% in 2010. The trend has been driven by a need for many large businesses to process greater volumes of data, despite pressure to keep IT costs under control.

The survey reveals that businesses rate mainframes over distributed computing systems, for their high levels of availability and their ability to process large volumes of data. Over half the businesses surveyed had revenues in excess of $1bn.

Main findings:

*The mainframe continues to be a critical part of today’s hybrid data centre with continued growth despite economic conditions

*IT budgets remain under pressure with mainframe cost reduction still a focus

*Cross-enterprise tools sets are critical to IT organizations as they expand and invest in today’s hybrid data centre

*Mainframe administrators are interested in current IT priorities such as cloud and SaaS and curious how mainframe could be included

*Social Media has touched the mainframe community with mobile apps and as a new communication method
