Redefining Interpersonal Communication

Cover Image
IMS architecture, designed to join agile service creation with QoS and security assurance, addresses diverging end-user requirements of diversity and simplicity. It's no secret technological advances are increasing competition in the telecommunications industry by leaps and bounds. Traditional fixed-line phone service is under attack from mobile service providers. Moreover, the advent of services such as Skype and GoogleTalk mean that both fixed and mobile face competition from Internet/application service providers, who can be extremely nimble in the services they provide because they have little or no legacy networks holding them back. IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) is being touted as a means for fixed and mobile service providers to augment existing services and quickly and inexpensively bring innovative new services to market to increase revenue, customer loyalty, and reduce churn. In fact, by offering composite services of any form of access, including legacy, incumbent service providers can offer services in ways that Internet-only companies without ties to legacy networks cannot. Legacy infrastructure, which might initially appear as a drawback, may in fact become a key asset to help incumbents survive and thrive.
